In the News

In the Athens Banner-Herald we read that Union Point is using art to try turn the town around. In 2001 the city experienced an economic downfall after 700 people lost their jobs with Green County’s largest employer, Chipman-Union Hosiery Plant. Their story doesn’t stop there--Union Point’s ups and downs will be told in a mural created by county native and poet Jan Whyllson. In an effort to draw more visitors, jobs and business, the Better Hometown program is working to reenergize the town with features like the mural.

"We want to make Union Point an art-centric creative economy destination town by renovating a local theater, creating art galleries and bringing new restaurants to the town," said Lee Nelson, who oversees the Better Hometown program.

At the start of Hurricane Katrina, Nelson moved with his wife from New Orleans to Union Point and opened up an art gallery, The Point of Art, in a historic downtown building. If you are interested, you should join the town as they gather at the gallery to celebrate the unveiling of the mural this Friday, June 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.
