GMOA's summer events

Here’s a handy list of all of our summer events. Don’t miss out!


Wednesday, June 9, 6­–8 p.m.

The Art of: Style

Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast, Watkinsville, Ga.

This event, sponsored by the Friends of GMOA, will feature an exploration of the main house of Ashford Manor (ca. 1893) led by Dale Couch, GMOA’s curator of the decorative arts. The event will include a discussion focusing on interior design, inspiration and the creative process. $10 Friends, $15 non-members or free with a new GMOA membership. Call 706.542.0830 to RSVP.



June 14–July 9

Art Adventures: Printmaking

This summer, GMOA will host its fourth annual community-wide outreach program. These one-hour workshops are designed for day care centers, camps and community centers in and around Athens-Clarke County and will be based on prints from the museum’s collection. Children will learn about techniques and materials printmakers use and create their own prints inspired by the works they see.



June 17, 5:30 p.m.

Lecture: A Selection of Landscape Paintings from the Permanent Collection at GMOA

State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Athens, Ga.

Paul Manoguerra, GMOA’s curator of American art, will discuss select landscape paintings from the museum’s permanent collection. This lecture is held in conjunction with Spirit of the Land, an exhibition of landscape works from various local artists on display at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The exhibition will be on display from June 6–27 and benefits the Athens Land Trust and the Ocoee River Land Trust.


June 23­–27

GMOA at AthFest

Downtown Athens, Ga.

GMOA will have a couple things going on at AthFest. On Friday, June 25, we are sponsoring Square Dance/Round Dance, an audience-interactive performance by Amelia Winger-Bearskin. More details on her performance to come. On Saturday, June 26, GMOA will have a table at KidsFest where you can decorate your own 2-D guitars.

July 1, 6:30 p.m.

The Collectors Present: The Art of the Steal

Ciné, downtown Athens, Ga.


The Collectors and CinĂ© have joined together to bring Don Argott's gripping documentary, The Art of the Steal, to Athens. The movie chronicles one of the art world's most fascinating controversies––the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation, a private collection of art valued at more that $25 billion. Dinner, catered by The National, begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the film at 8:00 p.m. $60 per Collector; $65 for the general public. For more information, call 706.542.0437.
