MFA Candidate Explores the Seen and Unseen Through Innovative Art

Caitlin Bielata creates encaustic wax paintings that incorporate graphite drawings, intaglio prints and other mixed media. Often, her paintings are buried in layers of wax, paint and latex with fragmented cutout patterns and shapes.

“Each painting is the result of methodical, repetitive detail as well as intuitive, improvisational decision making,” said Bielata. “My working process, collaging and building up layers, represents the process that goes in each of our minds as we build a framework for dealing with the world.”

Bielata was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and received her BFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2007. Her current work focuses on exploring spirituality as an individual construction of things seen and unseen. In her paintings, representation and abstraction coexist in indefinable spaces, creating dreamlike landscapes.

The “Master of Fine Arts Degree Candidates Exhibition” is on view at the Georgia Museum of Art from April 12 to May 4, 2014, with a free preview opening reception Friday, April 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. MFA Speaks is scheduled for Thursday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. and will feature the artists discussing their work.
