Art Around Athens (and Beyond...)

Friday, November 13, Georgia Piedmont Arts Center is hosting the opening reception for “Harvest of Art,” an exhibition that features a wide variety of works from local artists. The reception is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and is free. See www.georgiapiedmontartscenter.com for more information.

This Friday is a busy day at Lamar Dodd School of Art! From 7 to 9 p.m., at the main building on East Campus, the art school is hosting the opening reception for “Mother-Me-Do,” an exhibition by Jonathan Bouknight that references mythology, history, pop culture and science to express attitudes about gender, sexuality and identity. Also from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Bridge Exhibition Space, the art school is hosting the opening reception for the exhibition “The Others Who Haunt Me and Whom I Haunt” by Marie Porterfield, which explorates the unseen, the seen and the seeing. Visit www.marieporterfield.com for more information. 

Finally, in Gallery 101, is a free opening reception for “Continuance,” an exhibition that features kinetic video and sound sculpture by Gary Bardizbanian, a projected and sculptural piece by Kati Graham, flash animation by Elizabeth Baek and other technologically inspired works by Rejon Noah and Seth Nichols Stephens. Saturday, November 14, at the courthouse in downtown Danielsville, Madison County is hosting an artists’ market with folk art, pottery, jewelry, metal works, baskets, paintings, fiber crafts, sculptures and more from more than 30 local artists. The market begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Contact lebowen at alltel.net for more information.

Madison County Artist Market

The fourth annual Madison County Artist Market will take place next Saturday, November 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic courthouse in downtown Danielsville, Ga., which is only 20 minutes from Athens. The market will feature handcrafted items from more than 30 local artists, including folk art, pottery, glass, jewelry, metal works and more. The event has a blog on which participating artists post pictures and information about their art.

Some of the county’s artists have been recognized regionally and nationally. Pat and Janice Shields were featured in Southern Living for their pottery, and Stephanie Astalos-Jones in the same magazine for her psysanky (Ukrainian eggs) and jewelry. Another artist’s work was in a recent Warner Brothers movie. Producers leased folk artist Peter Loose’s work for scenes in the movie. His art has also been in various exhibitions throughout the Southeast.

The Madison County Artist Market is sponsored by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. The event is free and open to the public.
