Conference on Trecento Art

The Georgia Museum of Art and the Lamar Dodd School of Art are hosting their biennial conference on trecento art, which this time is being held in memory of Andrew Ladis. The conference will be held from November 11 to 13 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Twenty-eight speakers from around the world (Russia, Poland, Germany, England, France, Italy, Canada) and the United States will present papers addressing issues related to the 14th century in Italy and the Mediterranean Basin.

The conference will begin on November 11 with greetings and welcome from the Association of Graduate Art Students representative, Kathryn Hall, and GMOA’s director, William U. Eiland.

Following the introductions, Marvin Trachtenberg, of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, will present the 2010 Alfred Heber Holbrook Memorial Lecture. This year, the topic is “Building-in-Time: Thinking and Making Architecture in the Premodern Era.”

The Trecento Conference is free and open to the public. A full schedule for all three days can be found on the Lamar Dodd website.

The Lamar Dodd School of Art is located at 270 River Road at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Trecento Conference Set

If you've been wondering what's up with the museum's biennial Trecento conference, here's some news:
Conference on Trecento Art in memory of Andrew Ladis
November 11-13, 2010

The Georgia Museum of Art and the University of Georgia have sponsored symposia on Italian art for almost two decades. In 2010, to honor the memory of Andrew Ladis (d. 2007), we are returning to our original concept: art of the 14th century. The 14th century we have in mind is a long one, from roughly 1260 through 1453. Rather than focusing on a single city, style, medium or artist, the conference will be open to any topic related to art produced in the Mediterranean basin that in some way reveals the impact of, exchange among or presumed hegemony of Italian art. The conference will meet in Athens, Ga., on the campus of the University of Georgia. Opening events are scheduled for Thursday, November 11, 2010, and papers will be presented on Friday and Saturday, November 12 and 13.

The conference is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Proposal abstracts are to be submitted by May 8, 2010.

The conference is a major gathering for the field, and its proceedings have been published regularly, including, most recently, in "The Historian's Eye: Essays on Italian Art in Honor of Andrew Ladis," which is available for purchase from our online shop.

Andrew Ladis's book

As we've just returned the proof for the festschrift in honor of our dear friend and patron, the late Andrew Ladis (The Historian's Eye, which should arrive at the museum for sale June-ish) to the printer, he's been on all of our minds a lot. His book Giotto's O: Narrative, Figuration, and Pictorial Ingenuity in the Arena Chapel is fairly newly out from Penn State Press, and you can find out more about it here on their website and even sample a chapter here. We miss Andrew a lot, and we're sure many of you do too.
