Tonight at GMOA

Thursday nights are especially busy this April at the museum. We have either two or three events going on every Thursday for the rest of the month, and it's all free.

Tonight at 7 p.m., we have the beginning of our three-film series "Dress the Part: Fashion in Movies and Magazines," with "Bill Cunningham: New York," a documentary about the wonderful New York Times Style section photographer who creates collages of what people are wearing now (like this week's, which focused on spring)

Preceding the film, at 5:30 p.m., we have two lectures on the exhibition "A Divine Light: Northern Renaissance Paintings from the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery."

Trinita Kennedy, associate curator at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, in Nashville, Tenn., will speak on the above-pictured painting, the "Madonna of the Fireplace." Kennedy helped organize the exhibition with the BJUMG, contributing to its catalogue, but she's discovered even more about this painting since then and will present her findings. Our other speaker is John Nolan, from BJUMG, who will talk on the history of Northern Renaissance collecting at university art museums, in which his institution was a leader. Want to learn more? Read this Red & Black article on the lectures.

Remember, parking in the surface lots surrounding the museum is free after 5 p.m., even on weekdays.

Backpack Tours

GMOA added free Backpack Tours for children this fall, and the initiative is starting to take off. First, the Red & Black wrote an article about it. The AP picked up the press release. Georgia Magazine featured it. And now we have kids coming to take them, as documented in the photos above. Warning: they are extremely cute.

GMOA in the News/Video Redo

The Red and Black ran an article yesterday on our student docent program that we hope will encourage even more students to apply for it, especially as today is the deadline to apply for the year. Student docents, like community docents, must commit to one year of involvement with the program and 20 hours of service during the course of one semester. Click here to apply online.

We also had some small edits to make on the Family Day video that was up on the blog briefly before disappearing. Here it is again, courtesy of Larry Forte.

GMOA in the News

The Red & Black, UGA's student-run newspaper, ran a nice article this Monday on our most recently opened exhibition, "Introduction to the Centers."

Flagpole magazine mentioned us in articles about online resources for newcomers to Athens and about art around Athens in general. Its annual Guide to Athens is out now, too, both online and in print, and contains a nice blurb about GMOA.

GMOA in the News

Gordon Szymanski from the Red & Black contributed a nice article that ran today on our exhibition "The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection." His take is that it's not just for art people, but for anyone who's interested in history, geography, travel and so on. The exhibition closes May 2, so you have about a week and a half left to come see it if you haven't yet. Today's Tour at Two focuses on it and is a great opportunity to view the 153 prints and drawings it encompasses with the help of a well-educated guide.

GMOA in the News

The Red & Black has been calling us up left and right lately, and here's one of the articles that's resulted, on our exhibition "DalĂ Illustrates Dante's Divine Comedy." It also includes some racy talk by curator Lynn Boland!

GMOA in the News

The museum is mentioned briefly in the reports on new UGA Provost Jere Morehead's two brand-new hires, Laura Jolly and Libby Morris, which appear in the Red and Black and the Athens Banner-Herald. The former article includes the following information:
As vice provost for academic affairs, Morris will work closely with the Georgia Museum of Art, the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Performing Arts Center and the associate provosts. Morris also will advise Morehead on student academic honesty appeals, faculty appointments, and promotion and tenure cases. Morris was named director of the Institute of Higher Education in 2006 and has been a faculty member there since 1989. She will continue in both positions.

Under Morris' leadership, the institute launched an executive doctoral program in higher education in Atlanta, joined the National College Advising Corps-a consortium of colleges and universities that aims to increase the number of low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students completing higher education-and secured more than $600,000 in private funds to place college access advisers in high schools across Georgia. In addition, the institute expanded its international collaborations and research funding while climbing to sixth in national rankings of higher education programs.

"The University of Georgia is an outstanding research university, and I am honored to be asked to serve in this position," Morris said. "I look forward to working with the provost, the associate provosts, faculty, staff, and students in support of a wide variety of programs and initiatives. The Georgia Museum of Art and the Performing Arts Center are excellent examples of UGA's accomplishments in the arts, and I am especially pleased to work with these units."

GMOA in the News

The press release through UGA News Service about Dale Couch's appointment as curator of decorative arts is starting to get picked up. We see on Twitter that both ArtForum and the Red and Black have it up, and we're sure more will follow. This post will be updated as necessary.

GMOA in the News

The students are back! And that means the Red & Black is publishing every day again. Today they've got an article on the grant GMOA received from the National Endowment for the Arts to hire a curator of decorative arts, which is more than just running the press release and has great quotes from Jenny and Bill. One point that's important and that we're not sure everyone is aware of is that this curatorial position really helps further historical research within the state through the Henry D. Green Center for the Study of the Decorative Arts, one of the most successful initiatives of the museum. It's more than helpful to our mission--it's mission-centric.

GMOA in the News

Both the Red and Black and the Banner-Herald have covered our receipt of the NEA grant to hire a curator of decorative arts, with more to come on the part of the latter soon, we believe.
