GMOA in the News

Our press release about Holder Construction's Build Georgia Award for its work on the GMOA expansion and renovation project was picked up by the Athens Banner-Herald and Athens Patch.

Here's the full release, if you missed it:
JULY 14, 2011
Athens, Ga.– Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA) contractor Holder Construction Company recently received a 2011 Build Georgia Award for its work on the museum’s $20 million expansion project.

Build Georgia, a branch of the Association of General Contractors (AGC), honors the achievements of Georgia’s construction firms for their performance on some of the state’s most notable projects.

Each year, a panel of industry professionals selects construction projects to receive the Build Georgia Award.

The key judging criteria for the 2011 Build Georgia Award included: exceptional project safety performance, meeting the challenge of a difficult job, innovation in construction techniques and materials, excellence in project management and scheduling and excellence in client service.

Holder Construction Company was also awarded First Place in the Best Sustainable Building Practices division. The expansion of GMOA includes 16,000 square feet in new galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, an expanded lobby, additional storage space and study centers.

GMOA reopened in January 2011 with nine days of festivities. The celebration included multiple ribbon-cutting ceremonies, a black-tie gala, UGA Student Night, Family Day and more.

“The success of our expansion and renovation project is in large part due to the commitment and dedication of the team members,” said Annelies Mondi, deputy director of GMOA. “Holder was key in making sure our project was on schedule, in budget and met the museum’s goals and expectations.”

GMOA in the News

In case y'all missed our front-page appearance this weekend in the Athens Banner-Herald, here's the link to the fabulous article Lee Shearer wrote about the museum's impending reopening.

We also showed up in Art Daily, with an article on the reopening events, and snagged a big award from the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC), the release for which is showing up around the Internet.

GMOA in the News

The Athens Banner-Herald has today's Nash Boney lecture in its Best Bets today, and we agree!

We hope to see a lot of you at 4 p.m. today in Room 116 of the Visual Arts Building on Jackson Street, which has easy parking next door in the North Campus Deck. Dr. Boney stopped by our offices yesterday and provided us all with a lot of entertainment, so, while this is a Blue Card event for students, it shouldn't be dry in the slightest. Click on the flier above to see it bigger.

GMOA in the News/Don't Forget

The Athens Banner-Herald ran a brief piece on Nash Boney's lecture, which is coming up on Wednesday.

And don't forget to mark your calendars for that lecture, at which Boney will give a slideshow tour of the visual history of the University of Georgia. If you've ever picked up any of his books, you know how very entertaining he is, and we're greatly looking forward to the event, which will be this Wednesday, March 31, at 4 p.m. in room 116 of the Visual Arts Building on Jackson Street. You can park in the North Campus deck (down the block) or downtown. The lecture should last about 45 minutes, and on the way to it you'll see the exhibition "University of Georgia Turns 225," which is in the galleries to the left when you come in the front doors of the building.

Don't Forget: The Art of: Brew

The Banner-Herald is spotlighting our wonderful event tonight, The Art of: Brew, in its Best Bets section, and indeed it is. While we love it when you RSVP (it lets us know how much food to buy), it's not strictly necessary in a case like this, and if you haven't called the Friends to let us know you're coming tonight, please don't let that deter you from attending. The event may seem a little pricey, but it can serve as a renewal of your membership, and every bit you contribute helps us maintain our educational programming, especially in a time of ever-deeper budget cuts. We hope we'll see all of you tonight!

GMOA in the News

The Athens Banner-Herald had a wonderful article this morning on our Black History Month event that took up much of the front page of the living section. Our thanks to Joe Vanhoose! The same event receives mention as well in Ryan Blackburn's article in the news section about the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials meeting. Please, if you haven't RSVPed for the dinner, today is definitely your last chance, and if you can't make the dinner, remember that the concert (at 7:30 p.m. in the UGA Chapel) is free and open to the public.

GMOA in the News

Press post-Speakeasy is starting to roll in, thanks to the wonderful press release our intern Amanda wrote, which appears below.
Speakeasy raises funds for the Georgia Museum of Art

Athens, Ga. – Speakeasy, a major fundraising event for the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA), was held Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the home of C.L. Morehead Jr., who also served as the largest sponsor of the event.

This rare opportunity to view Mr. Morehead’s home and extensive art collection included dinner, tours of the collection conducted by GMOA curators, a wonderful jazz performance by Faith and an exclusive silent auction.

About 100 guests attended, and the auction brought in nearly $5,000, which will be used to fund the museum’s educational programs and services. The top selling lots at the auction were a framed oil painting by Mary Hardman titled “Transition” and Jim Fiscus’ photograph “Doll Cabinet.” In all, 11 lots were donated and auctioned.

Speakeasy was sponsored by C.L. Morehead Jr., Blount Photo, Walton Media Services and Interactive Attractions.

To download photographs by Blount Photo from Speakeasy, visit our Web site at http://www.uga.edu/gamuseum/friends/event_photos.html or visit our Flickr account at http://www.flickr.com/photos/gmoa to view a slideshow.
Arts Across Georgia picked it up, and we expect to see a few more mentions trickle in. The museum also received a mention in the Athens Banner-Herald for its Luce Grant for "Advancing American Art," and the exhibition of works from Jason Schoen's collection at the Westmoreland continues to garner press notice. Finally, Kate Kretz, who received her MFA from UGA, blogs about the film "Who Does She Think She Is?" which the museum will be screening in association with Women's History Month on March 24 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Go ahead and mark your calendars for that one.

GMOA in the News

The Athens Banner-Herald ran a nice story this weekend about our upcoming "A Soulful Celebration" event, which honors Dr. Louis and Mrs. Mae Castenell and Black History Month. Remember, this event is coming up in a hurry (Wednesday, February 24), and we need your RSVPs if you're planning on coming to the dinner, which will be catered by The National and cost $40. The subsequent concert is free and open to the public and doesn't require response ahead of time.

Spotted!

We'd forgotten to check back in on the Athens Banner-Herald's site but Spotted was taking photos at the student activities fair and captured a pair of our cute interns (Aurelie and Jennifer, whose names you may recognize from this blog). Click here to see the rest of the gallery.

GMOA in the News

The Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau is promoting Speakeasy very nicely on their Web site. Remember, this event is less than a week from today, and while space is limited, we still have openings, so please call 706.542.0437 to RSVP and purchase your tickets. It's also highlighted in the Athens Banner-Herald's calendar.

Allison Floyd spotlighted the upcoming "A Soulful Celebration," GMOA's Black History Month event, in her Athens Banner-Herald article on what to do during Black History Month.

GMOA in the News

The museum is mentioned briefly in the reports on new UGA Provost Jere Morehead's two brand-new hires, Laura Jolly and Libby Morris, which appear in the Red and Black and the Athens Banner-Herald. The former article includes the following information:
As vice provost for academic affairs, Morris will work closely with the Georgia Museum of Art, the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Performing Arts Center and the associate provosts. Morris also will advise Morehead on student academic honesty appeals, faculty appointments, and promotion and tenure cases. Morris was named director of the Institute of Higher Education in 2006 and has been a faculty member there since 1989. She will continue in both positions.

Under Morris' leadership, the institute launched an executive doctoral program in higher education in Atlanta, joined the National College Advising Corps-a consortium of colleges and universities that aims to increase the number of low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students completing higher education-and secured more than $600,000 in private funds to place college access advisers in high schools across Georgia. In addition, the institute expanded its international collaborations and research funding while climbing to sixth in national rankings of higher education programs.

"The University of Georgia is an outstanding research university, and I am honored to be asked to serve in this position," Morris said. "I look forward to working with the provost, the associate provosts, faculty, staff, and students in support of a wide variety of programs and initiatives. The Georgia Museum of Art and the Performing Arts Center are excellent examples of UGA's accomplishments in the arts, and I am especially pleased to work with these units."

GMOA in the News

Another thing we're working on is catching up on clips. The Athens Banner-Herald ran a lovely interview with our newest curator, Dale Couch, just before Christmas, that you might well have missed if you were out of town for the holidays. Please take a look. We think it really encompasses Dale's populist philosophy when it comes to decorative arts.

GMOA in the News

Lee Shearer of the Athens Banner-Herald called yesterday to ask some questions about new media/social media, and this article that mentions GMOA and its Second Life endeavors is the result of his labors. We talked about a lot more on the phone that didn't make it in, including our efforts in Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, and maybe, just maybe, we've helped Lee another step along the way toward participating in the first two.
