Call for Artists

The Duluth Fine Arts League (DFAL) has issued a call for artists for “Living Honorarium,” a public art project conceived by Shirley Fanning Lasseter, former mayor of Duluth, Ga. This project will honor the members and living veterans of its firefighter and police forces.

“So many people are honored when a life is lost, but few while alive . . . . I want people to know we appreciate them now and forever—not just when their jobs are done and life is gone,” said former mayor Lasseter.

Professional artists in the Southeast working in any media are eligible to enter. The winner will receive $50,000. Entries will be installed on an octagonal piece of land in Historic Duluth.

Call for Artists

95 Artists, the first annual 2-month exhibition of artists working in all media, is calling artists who live in states touched by Interstate 95. The exhibition is an open group show in New York City’s East Village. The deadline for submission is June 10. Read the following information below from Sean Corbett, the exhibition’s curator. Click here for the detailed document and application form.

WHY: I-95 is arguably the most important highway in all of America.

This single line carries us to each other and binds us together. It takes us where we’re going, sends us back to where we’re from and it guides our escape.

Like scientists looking through a telescope into outer space, we stare up and down the line and wonder what kind of inspiration lies off the next exit. I-95 binds together countless thriving new arts communities worth exploring.

WHAT: We are looking for all media. 95 Artists will survey the creative expressions in all media by artists living and working along I-95. It is about the people, place and things discovered alongside a lifeline we know so well.

WHO are this year’s 95 Artists and what’s their section of the pike like?

WHEN: July 1-Sept 4, 2010. Opening reception July 10, 5-8 p.m.

WHERE: Umbrella Arts, 317 East 9th Street, East Village, NYC

There is a $30 fee for each submission of 5 images (jpg).

Please consider submitting to 95 Artists so we can bring you together with other members of the many thriving communities along I-95 for one big, exciting summer group show.

The movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, directed by Terry Gilliam, instantly came to mind when I learned about the first annual Moonlight Gypsy Market, presented by Mr. Blank’s Carnivale of Black Hearts, which takes place on Friday, August 13th, 2010, at Little Kings Shuffle Club in downtown Athens. The movie features a traveling sideshow troupe with mythical illusions and bright colors in the form of an imaginary world that takes place in the doctor’s mind.

With further research, I learned that Mr. Blank’s Carnivale of Black Hearts is an Athens-based variety sideshow complete with “musical, scary, strange, odd, gross, hilarious and entertaining acts” (according to http://bit.ly/cGExNi), perhaps not unlike those in Doctor Parnassus.

Mr. Blank’s Carnivale of Black Hearts is calling for artists of all sorts to participate in the market place. The show and market start at sundown on Friday and continue into the early hours of Saturday morning. If you feel your artwork and crafts are considered “outsider”, erotic, macabre, weird or dark, please submit your work! Go to http://bit.ly/cBss5X for information on the submission process, securing a table and payment options. Remember, the show is juried and the deadline for entries is July 18th, 2010.

Calls for Entries

We've got three here with deadlines coming up soon, so if you're an artist seeking places to put your art, take a look at the following.

The Morton Theatre in downtown Athens is accepting submissions of works celebrating the Morton Theatre, Hot Corner or "the culture, heritage and community which comprise Hot Corner" for the Morton Theatre Centennial Art Show and Sale until Thursday, May 13. Submissions will run you $20 each. Call 706.613.3770 or email centennial@mortontheatre.com for more information.

This Saturday, May 15, is the deadline to register for a booth at the third annual Five Points Art Fest, scheduled for June. Booths are $50 each and you can download a registration form as a pdf by clicking here.

Finally, the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, on the UGA Campus, is always looking for local artists to exhibit. Here's some information from them:
In an effort to promote the talents of local and regional artists to our community, as well as our national and international visitors, The Georgia Center is pleased to invite artists from your organization to submit applications for display of works of art in our temporary exhibition space, The Hill Atrium. Exhibitions of two dimensional works are displayed for a maximum of one month. Predetermined holes are located in the walls of the Hill Atrium for your convenience and will aid you in determining the number of works to submit for exhibition approval. Applications must be submitted a minimum of 90 days prior to the desired start date of the exhibition; will be reviewed and rewarded on a first-come, first-served basis; and exhibition content is subject to approval. Artists are encouraged to provide supplemental materials for distribution to visitors for the duration of the exhibition. In addition, wall labels, with pricing if works are for sale, is permitted. Artists may also choose to book a reception in conjunction with the exhibition. A public event provides artists with a chance to invite the community, university, and friends to view the exhibition, as well as answer questions about their work.
For an application or if you have more questions, please contact Jenna Chambers at jenna.chambers@georgiacenter.uga.edu or 706.542.9334.

Calls for Entries

We've seen a bunch of these lately, so here are the latest three.

The Child Development Lab at the McPhaul Center of UGA (which is the birth to 5-year-old preschool) is looking for art.
The directors at the Child Development Lab are planning on having a small art show in the spring to show off some of the children's art. This is an opportunity for parents and grandparents to order the children's art which can be placed on mugs, mouse pads, and so on, as a means of raising funds. In addition to the children's art, the directors were hoping to raise additional money by selling some more advanced art work. If anyone within the art department at UGA has any artwork they are willing to donate to the show please contact Melissa Vann (contact info below). They would be extremely grateful for all types (paintings, ceramics, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, etc). Please let Ms. Vann know if any type of donation you would be willing to give. -- Melissa Vann The University of Georgia Advertising and Spanish melissaleevann@gmail.com 912.220.9981
We're sure they'd be interested in all kinds of donations.

The Athens Human Rights Festival is, as always, looking for artists to design a logo.
This year's festival needs a logo. If you have an idea for this year's logo, draw it and drop it off, or send it to: Jeff Hannan, LS Design, 1160 South Milledge Ave., Athens, GA. 30605 or e-mail to art@lsdesignonline.com, 706-353-9995

Your design is entirely up to you. The festival organizers only require that it contain the text: 31st Annual Athens Human Rights Festival, May 2nd and 3rd, Athens, GA, somewhere in the design. If your design is chosen you will need to create a large copy of it to become the backdrop for the festival stage set up in downtown Athens the weekend of the festival.

Deadline for submitting logo designs is March 10, 2009.

Good Luck! Your creation will become part of an Athens tradition.

Questions? Call Jeff 706-714-5751 for more details.
Last but certainly not least, Hotel Indigo is accepting works of textile art for the exhibition "Material World: Art Meets the Runway." Submit a photo and a description of the work by emailing low-res jpgs to celebratethearts@yahoo.com with the altered subject line: YourName: CtA2010 by April 9.

Arts Unleashed 2010

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Arts Division is looking for performing and visual artists to participate in the fourth annual Arts Unleashed, a guerrilla arts program that encourages artists to develop innovative projects to be presented in such unconventional arts venues as parks, business lobbies and stores. Past projects include modern dance in a bookstore and a haiku poetry hike at the zoo.

Arts Division administrator Stuart Miller says the department is “looking for artists who are skilled in their craft, but also value and enjoy the chance to share their talent with others.” If you’re an artist, give this a shot! It’s a fun and different way of showing your art to the world.

Park a Park (above) was the first event of Arts Unleashed 2009. This interactive sculpture, hosted by the Art X Hypermedia class of the University of Georgia, took place on the top floor of the College Avenue Parking Deck. The site had a lookout to view downtown Athens, games, a live landscape portrait and a rest area.

The deadline for applications and project proposals is in two weeks (March 8). Artists can choose a date between March 22 and June 28 and will be assigned a location based on their activity and the program schedule. Call 706.613.3620 for more information. The application and guidelines can be found here.

Call for Artists

We've got a few of these for you.

First off, Michael Lachowski, member of Pylon, graphic designer and artist about town, theoretical candidate for mayor and much more, is seeking artists to contribute to his 6X6 Media Events, as chronicled on this blog. Here are some of the details:
Athens artists working in experimental, digital media, film, performance, sound, or combination arts: 6X6 wants your work

The 6X6 Media Arts Events will be held monthly from February 2010 to July 2010 in order to provide a forum for submission and curation of media artworks and build a community of participation, review, and response for both audience and practitioner.

The program title “6X6” refers to the structure of the program:

* Six events
* Sixty minutes long each
* Six pieces per event
* Six minutes or less per piece
* Six curators
* Six themes

Pieces are limited in length to six minutes, and no more than six will be selected for any one event. No limitations are placed on what type of work can be submitted except: it must be able to be projected digitally, performed, played via sound system, or some combination. Electronic files and support materials can be submitted via email (up to 5 MB's), CD, DVD, or internet download. Entries with technical problems need to be resolved by the artist or will be withdrawn or rejected. Terms of submission include permission to exhibit both live and online (whether or not selected for a particular event), permission to video tape performances, and permission to include selected work in a compilation DVD. No materials will be returned. Other than these uses, the artists will retain all rights.
A submission form can be found here. In its restrictions, the project kind of reminds us of the Pecha Kucha, which hasn't made it as far as Athens but is thriving in Atlanta.

A bit less hip is the "Give Wildlife a Chance" poster contest, which is geared toward students and sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and The Environmental Resources Network, Inc. (T.E.R.N.), with a deadline of March 22. This year's theme is "The Future of Georgia’s Wildlife is in YOUR Hands." To download a pdf of the brochure, click here.

The Gwinnett Citizen just ran an article about the Hudgens Prize, which consists of $50,000 in cash and a solo exhibition for an artist in any medium as long as he or she lives in Georgia full-time and is 18 or older. Jurors are David Kiehl, curator of prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art; Sylvie Fortin, editor-in-chief of ART PAPERS Magazine; and Eungie Joo, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the New Museum in New York. The deadline for entry is June 4, and more information can be obtained from the Jacqueline Casey Hudgens Center for the Arts Web site.

Athens Academy is looking for mail art and accepting entries of postcard-sized artwork for inclusion in an exhibition there that will be up through March. Both sides of the card will be on display as part of a permanent exhibit at the school. Mail your entries to Lawrence Stueck, Athens Academy, P.O. Box 6548, Athens, GA 30604 or email him at lstueck at athensacademy.org for more details.

"Art Works"

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman hit the ground running this fall with what he has named “Art Works,” a 6-month tour on which he will learn and blog about different places where art works. Landesman defines “art works” in the following ways:

1. “Art works” is a noun. They are the books, crafts, dances, designs, drawings, films, installations, music, musicals, paintings, plays, performances, poetry, textiles, and sculptures that are the creation of artists.

2. “Art works” is a verb. Art works on and within people to change and inspire them; it addresses the need people have to create, to imagine, to aspire to something more.

3. “Art works” is a declarative sentence: arts jobs are real jobs that are part of the real economy. Art workers pay taxes, and art contributes to economic growth, neighborhood revitalization, and the livability of American towns and cities.

Landesman’s first trip was to Peoria, Ill., in November with a tour of the Warehouse District, a roundtable discussion with artists and various community leaders and a performance of the Eastlight Theatre’s production of the musical “Rent.” Since his trip to Peoria, Landesman has been to St. Louis, Memphis, Miami and Washington, D.C. He plans to visit California, Idaho and Kentucky in the next few months. During and after each trip, he blogs about how art works in each place.

Despite some negative reactions to the tour and its name, the concept of NEA blogging seems like a good move overall. The blog brings art into people’s lives in an interesting way and highlights the importance of active arts communities.

The NEA has also announced a request for proposals for an “Art Works” logo. Click here for more information.

The department of student affairs at the University of Georgia’s Gwinnett campus hosts an event for its students each week called Coffee and Culture to expose its students to various forms of art. Visual artists and musicians attend each event and coffee is served. Artists are allowed to price their items for sale. There are many opportunities to attend Coffee and Culture next semester (from early January through the end of April). Each event is from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

If you are interested in participating, email Ellen at ellendutro@gmail.com for the list of dates and with any questions.

The Georgia Center Invites Local Artists to Display Work

The Georgia Center for Continued Education, the University of Georgia’s conference center and hotel, is inviting local artists to submit applications for their works of art to be displayed in the Georgia Center’s Hill Atrium.

The Georgia Center is working to promote the talents of local and regional artists to the community, as well as to the Center’s national and international visitors.

The conference center and hotel hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year from around the world, operates four dining options and supports many private and university-sponsored events. For more than 50 years, the Georgia Center has remained dedicated to the fine arts. The Center’s permanent art collection features work by local and international artists, including Lamar Dodd, Mary Padgelek, Bob Hart, Martha Odum, Jean Gibson, Alice Pruitt, David Kessler, Jerry Maddox, James Dean, Ray Ellis, Lori Keith Robinson, Laura Liden and Alvar Suñol. The Georgia Center’s two auditorium spaces, Mahler Auditorium and Masters Hall, have hosted numerous musical and theatrical performances.

Artists interested in submitting work for display should submit an application 90 days prior to the desired start date of the exhibition. Works will be reviewed and rewarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and content will be subject to approval. Works will be displayed for one month. Due to heavy traffic flow, three-dimensional works will not be displayed.

In addition, artists are encouraged to provide supplemental materials for distribution to visitors for the duration of the exhibition. Wall labels, with or without pricing, are permitted. Artists may also choose to book a reception in conjunction with the exhibition. A public event provides artists with a chance to invite the community, university and friends to view the exhibition and to answer questions about their work.

For more information and an application, contact Jenna Chambers at 706.542.9334 or via email at jenna.chambers at georgiacenter.uga.edu.
