Art Without Walls

It looks like the Georgia Museum of Art isn't the only organization out there trying to expand the realm of public art. One of the reasons we're working hard on new media and other ways to reach you is because we won't have a building of our own for the next two years, but it's a good idea for more reasons than that very concrete one. A new nonprofit organization called Art Without Walls is pushing for public art in both virtual and physical spaces, and its first project is pictured above. Conceptual artist Serkan Ozkaya and assistants drew the front page of the Louisvlle, Ky., Courier-Journal on Friday of this past week. Ozkaya has pursued this kind of project previously, but the idea of a work of art being delivered to thousands of unsuspecting households is an exciting one, one that renews the very concept of public art. Too often, we become accustomed to sculptures or murals that we pass every day. They become part of our everyday environment in a way that lessens their wonder. The Ozkaya/Art Without Walls collaboration breaks up that routine and lets us renew our view of the world around us.
