Deirdre Conneely, our associate curator, just sent along this account of her business trip to Pittsburgh, Penn., and the above photo.
I traveled to Pittsburgh, Penn., last week to attend the program "Managing and Preserving Archival Collections," presented by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts. The first day focused on archival management. Beth Bensman, archives specialist from the National Archives, spoke on appraisal, arrangement and description. On day two Hilary Kaplan, conservator and training specialist at NARA, discussed preservation more specifically maintaining and protecting the collection. Coincidentally, the two speakers had ties to Georgia: Bensman had worked at the Richard B. Russell Library at UGA and Kaplan worked at the Georgia Archives. Over the two days, I gathered some great ideas and questions to ponder in regards to the Pierre Daura Archive.
